Getting ready to sail to the Antarctica…

We finally set sail to the Antarctica. We ran into a old friend, our room attendant from the Panama Canal cruise Raquel. Fun to see old friends. Raquel and Lance got into a debate about the American Idol show and Raquel won. Our first day of getting acquainted and settled in on the boat. We had a cocktail party to push off from Ushuaia. Here are a few photos of that. We are in the middle of Drakes passage and it is pretty calm. Tomorrow will be another day at sea and then the expedition begins. Had a nice dinner tonight with several couples we met and our Geologist lecturer Juan Restrepo.

IMG_6037We had a getting ready to sail cocktail party on the deck. Met some very interesting people.

IMG_6038Boat across the way was the Le Boreal that was also bound for the Antarctica. The Le Boreal is behind us. We are all heading to the same place. We met a couple at the airport who is on that boat. I wouldn’t be surprised to run into them on the ice.

  3. Did you spend much time in Ushuaia? So you must have flown from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia to begin the cruise. Will you actually get off the boat in Antarctica to walk around on the ice? And if so will you walk around with the penguins? It looks like the two of you are having a terrific time. Where do you end up? It seems I remember Buenos Aires but ships also go to Rio so I’m not sure. Take care of each other and enjoy your adventure. Mary and I may do this cruise someday as many friends have done this and they thought it was a blast. Actually had one friend who’s now in Beijing who went on a boat with only 95 passengers and he actually slept in a tent on the ice. Did you enjoy Ushuaia?
    Talk to you soon!!

    Gary and Mary

  4. We were on Le Boreal. My guess is that you will not see another ship. We never saw one the entire time we were there and there were six or eight others on the area. We think they do it on purpose.

    • Cathy, it is like God is holding open the door for us. Yesterday it changed in the afternoon so all trips out were cancelled. We were already out so we had a hard time getting back on the boat. The Sun was out today and no wind. We didn’t even have to wear cloves. Did a memorial for a friend who died and her memorial in San Jose was today.
